Our Take

Sony's February State of Play was, frankly, overwhelming — in the best possible way. Where recent showcases have sometimes felt thin, padded with trailers for already-announced titles, this one delivered genuine surprises alongside substantial updates.

The headline grabber was the God of War trilogy remake, confirming what fans have speculated about for years. But the real surprise was God of War: Sons of Sparta, a 2D pixel art Metroidvania that dropped immediately on the PlayStation Store. Shadow-dropping a game during a showcase is a flex, and this one landed because the game itself looks genuinely crafted rather than a quick tie-in.

Marvel's Wolverine footage showed a darker, more mature direction than Spider-Man, which is exactly what the character demands. The combat looked visceral and weighty in ways that suggest Insomniac is pushing their engine hard.

Standout Announcements

  • Metal Gear Solid Collection Vol. 2 — Finally bringing MGS4: Guns of the Patriots and Peace Walker to modern platforms (August 27 launch)
  • John Wick game — Cinematic gunplay and close combat, which is exactly the game this franchise deserves
  • Kena: Scars of Cosmora — A sequel to one of the most visually stunning indie games of the PS5 era
  • Castlevania: Belmont's Curse — A new entry in the legendary franchise
  • Death Stranding 2 PC release confirmed for March 19

The Bigger Picture

This showcase felt like Sony demonstrating confidence in their pipeline at a time when the industry narrative has been dominated by layoffs and studio closures. Whether that confidence is warranted will depend on execution, but the breadth and quality of what they showed suggests PlayStation's first-party and partnership strategy is in a strong position heading into mid-2026.
